"Violation of Law" Error When Processing Credit Cards or Refunds

You may occasionally receive a "Violation of Law" error when processing a credit card payment or issuing a refund. While the message can sound alarming, it does not indicate an issue with Kennel Connection or your payment processing setup.

What Causes This Error?

A "Violation of Law" error is returned directly by the card issuer and typically means the transaction was blocked due to an issue with the cardholder's account.

Because the decline is coming from the issuing bank, Kennel Connection cannot override or bypass the error.

How to Resolve the Error

If you receive this message:

  1. Inform the client that their card issuer declined the transaction.
  2. Ask the client to contact the bank or credit card company associated with the card.
  3. Once the bank confirms the account is in good standing, attempt the transaction again.

⚠️ Important: This error is not caused by the amount of the transaction, the appointment, or the refund being processed. The card issuer must resolve the issue before the transaction can be approved.

Common Situations

This error may appear when:

  • Processing a credit card payment.
  • Refunding a previously processed payment.
  • Charging a card on file.
  • Running a manually entered credit card transaction.

If the error persists after the client has contacted their bank, the client may need to use a different payment method.
